[Catalog] [Archive]

/cgl/ is a board for the following:

• Cosplay
• Lolita
• J-fashion
• Conventions & gatherings
• Sewing & prop-making
• Craftsmanship tools/materials & tutorials
• LARPing
• Discussing accessories such as wigs/circle lenses/prosthetics/makeup (These must be within the context of the board-related topics listed above; weight loss threads should be kept in /fit/, beauty and fashion generals should be kept in /fa/)

Our board rules are simple:

• Thread content must be related to one of the categories covered in the list above. Off-topic threads and replies will be deleted.
• Singling people out maliciously is not tolerated and will result in a ban. 4chan is not your personal army. The singling out rule applies to vendetta threads and replies being made to attack a specific person, as well as predatory behavior like doxing. Discussing an individual in general isn't against the rules as long as it's done within context of cosplay/lolita/j-fashion.

I might switch up and let my fancy take me the next time I run to the liquor store but last time I brought gin, absinthe, kalua, triple sec, vodka, tequila, and bourbon. Usually also get lemons, limes, grapefruit juice, orange juice, soda water, and granulated sugar. I might experiment a bit, though.
Any of the handful of people at the AWA /cgl/ meetup last year could vouch for me.

they would all stop scalping if people would stop buying from them. that heinous jap scalper on fril only started scalping after she saw how much people were willing to pay for brand. blame the tiktok trustfund zoomers and shopping addicts.
>inb4 someone calls me a poorfag
supporting scalpers is being looked down upon in every other consoomerism based hobby.
>>
>>10912845
The issue is that a lot of people just don't *know*. You'd be surprised at how many people have never bought an ap dress for less than $100. The amount of scalpers in this community has overinflated these prices and newbies just accept it because they dont know how expensive their expensive dresses should be.
>>
>>10912848
Obviously no one likes scalpers but if you’re that concerned with the rise of prices, you should look at the root of the problem. Most scalpers are Chinese or Americans who are profiting off uneducated people or trendhoppers with daddies money. You know that your none of those things so it’s easier to just wait for good deals. How long you wait depends on your style and how rare/old it is, but contrary to popular belief most jfashion finds are just a matter of time until they appear on the secondhand market.
>>
>>10912853
The problem is these scalpers are basically running a business and can camp out all day waiting for cheap dresses to appear so they can instantly snap them all up to flip. Normal people just buy the items that they personally want, but career scalpers mess up the secondhand market by hoarding large numbers of items.
Unfortunately this happens anywhere that there is limited supply and high demand and it's hard to control. There will always be people who want an item so bad they will just buy it even if they know they are getting ripped off.
>>
>>10912845
the trouble comes up when scalpers get a hold of rare pieces. it's hard not to support a scalper when it's an item that almost never shows up. the mary magdalene market is particularly bad right now because mm always had very small stock runs. old moitie has a similar problem because the rereleases are so poor quality. lolitas can also be very competitive, so it's hard to organise any kind of scalper boycott.

Foid here,

Sure it might not be ideal but that’s the thing, women are unable to grasp how unwanted the average man is and the effect that has.
I’m friends with some ugly fucking chick, fucking acne land whales with horrible hygiene, they still get hit on regularly and act as if it’s horrible.

Meanwhile even when I’m at my lowest and most depressed, as a fit successful man I’m unable to get even bottom tier pussy like them.
At any moment they could just say yes to a man’s advances. But for me to have a chance I need to win the fucking lottery.

Keep in mind I did eventually get a girl, but it was purely luck after a decade of bullshit, and it’s still me settling hard just because she’s at least thin.

Unless someone can prove otherwise, I'm guess no Jap wrote it. Even with the mistakes, it reads too much like something from a native English speaker. Also the first results when you look it up are on Reddit, which isn't as damningly fake as iFunny but pretty close
>>
>>10912874
>>10912880
I doubt a Japanese person would write to bring salt.

As far as insular goes, most Japanese people abroad in the West end up that way because Japanese education and media raises them from infancy to believe it's impossible for a Westerner to learn the Japanese language or Japanese customs EVEN IF they've been in Japan for 10+ years, that a Westerner is some magical ambassador of their country doomed to constantly tell all Japanese people in Japan they meet about where New York is and how to eat a hamburger. Japanese people are raised with the same exact
concept about themselves, that they're born as and will die as Japanese speaking, Japanese living people and that Japan is so unique they'll never be able to assimilate abroad in the West so they should just give up. Obviously this is nonsense but if you believe it that's how you'll end up.

In America the internment camps brought Japanese Americans together as a culture and the result is many neighborhoods actually
ostracized the FOB Japanese who came to America after WWii because those guys didn't experience the camps. This resulted in Japanese descendants from internment camp families keeping their culture and isolationism/racism in the family as a defense mechanism and mark of elitism but the "pure" Japanese who didn't experience the camps ended up mixing with non-Japanese
and getting fluent in English right from the first generation, because they had no choice - the American-Japanese refused to associate with them. I imagine there's some story behind the unique attitudes of Japanese in Brazil and Canada as well.
>>
>>10912885
can confirm. if you're mixed blood, in a mixed marriage, or have mixed kids, these types won't associate with you either.

Is it normal for people to ask for pictures and immediately leave after?
Or is this another Switzerland specialty where everybody hates socializing?
OR is it because I'm male?
How do you even make friends at a con?

I went to a convention as Chainsaw Man last October and while over 20 people asked me for a pic, nobody actually stuck around or even made an attempt at small talk. I was hoping to meet people.

There's another convention coming up next month and I'm not sure if I wanna go get photographed and go back home all alone with no new contacts or friends again.

There’s also the fact that colossal rooms go fast. If you get one and post to colossal’s fb or discord that you have spots up for grabs in your room, I guarantee they will get filled. If you make a post like that though, make it clear IN the post that you aren’t just looking to fill spaces in the room, but you’re also looking for people to hang with at the con

>>
>>10908990
My problem is, I don't know what to talk about...
>>
>>10908990
Yeah it's normal. Happens to me all the time. Most people just want the photo. Especially if you're in a high traffic area like a corridor or vendor hall where people are constantly on their way somewhere.
Next time try breaking the ice by complimenting them and asking a question while you have their attention. Like "Thanks! I love your _, where did you get it?" The roll from there. If they're interested in talking they'll engage, if not they'll make an excuse and leave. It'll help if you have a friend with you as social proof that you're not a loner weirdo. Then you and your friend can team up with the new people you just met and hang out a while.
This will work best at meets, interactive panels, etc, basically you want to be at places where people congregate and stay for a while rather than places where people are busy and just passing through. That way you're not interrupting their itinerary by trying to make friends. Avoid panels that are serious or presentation-focused though, that's like going to a movie on a first date. You're not actually going to talk to people and make friends if everyone is silently focused on a fucking powerpoint the whole time.

Right I'm new as fuck to this board so be gentle here. I'm planning on cosplaying Gadem from Mobile Suit Gundam for a con this July.
>pic related
I already have someone working on the cape since they offered but the rest is very much up in the air. I have a rough template for the helmet being cooked up, but with the uniform I'm torn on trying to go for military surplus or try to make a basic pair of matching green pants and a jacket, since I doubt I could find surplus in a green that looks right, let alone that both match. I also don't know how I'd go about doing the collar, since there's a decent bit of detail there. Note I have a old sewing machine but I've never used it. Also I saw a lot of guides and recommendations for wigs but is there anything similar for facial hair?

Any tips to try and achieve all this would be very much welcome, thanks.
>>
>>10912701
There are endless amounts of nerds with 3d printers who can do the helmet and other hard goods
For soft goods you usually have to talk to a woman, though there are also nerds with embroidery machines for the collar
Pick a high quality fabric that looks like uniform material, not the first cotton you see
>>

A lady I knew was overweight her whole life no matter what diet or exercise... turned out she was allergic to milk protein, and living in Europe it was put in everything. So even lactose free stuff would make her balloon up and retain weight. She moved to an Asian country that didn't put milk in everything and got skinny without any effort. In my case, when I went on meds that changed my serotonin and dopamine levels I gained weight. So it could be something you are already ingesting is changing how your body handles fat.

Real advice:
>Your body wants to stop eating when it gets the nutrients it needs, not necessarily when it swallows a certain amount of solids. Always eat nutrient dense food, ideally the most dense you can find, which usually means homemade fermented items (pasteurization kills nutrients) - don't eat salad, eat fermented salad (kimchi, saurkraut). Don't eat white bread, eat fermented bread (sourdough, fermented pancake batter, overnight oats). Replace onions sauce with watered-down dark miso. Replace yoghurt with home-made milk kefir.
>Cut out as much table sugar, corn syrup and other syrups as possible, and don't replace it with aspartame or other artificial sweeteners. You'll need to look at food labels - be prepared to see your 1 tiny packet of ketchup being 50% of your daily sugar intake, and expensive "healthy" food really being a ton of junk. If you want something sweet, add whole fruit (not smoothies). After 3 weeks your body will adjust to your new eating style and what was sour or bitter to you before will now be neutral or sweet.
>Don't envision going to the gym every day. Instead build exercise into the routines you already do, or find out a way to get paid to exercise. For example wear leg weights all day, replace your chair so you have to exercise at your computer desk, get a job like housekeeping or teaching that makes you move all day.
>Use a pedometer all day, track which activities/days are high exercise.

Hey /cgl
I'm working on getting my Ono-Michio head finished up and am now on trying to get the fabirc layered in the least painless way possible. Im looking at using a larger swath of felt to just overlay the sphere and sew at the points where it was bunching. I don't sew but am willing to learn. Are there patterns for just sewing over a sphere that's made of foam?

Any tips on keeping cool in a mascot head?

>There are endless amounts of nerds with 3d printers who can do the helmet and other hard goods
While true I'm fairly deadset on making the helmet myself, it may look a bit meh, but I need to start somewhere.

>For soft goods you usually have to talk to a woman, though there are also nerds with embroidery machines for the collar
What do you mean by "talk to a woman" here? Just try to find someone with the tools for the embroidery on the collar or something else?

>Pick a high quality fabric that looks like uniform material, not the first cotton you see
I did plan on grabbing a cheaper fabric to see if the template actually worked before getting something better, but regardless of that, I'm still unsure on most aspects of the uniform.
Like, idk if I should just run out to a thrift shop, grab some clothes that look similar to what I'd need, take them apart and use them like a template, search for something online, or pray I find something in a milsurp store.
Again I'm very new to this so wanted a smidge of guidance here.

I specifically bought a $50, 1950s children's sewing machine because there's no bobbin (and it doesn't use electricity, and it fits in a backpack). It improved my motivation to sew.
>>
>>10911026
sort of. go in person to buy the matching thread. bring a scrap of your fabric along with you. hold it up, scan around the shop display with it, and zero in on the spool of thread whose color is identical to the fabric. and then leave it there. don't purchase this color thread that looks so exactly the same you think there's no way in hell it could be anything other than a perfect match. instead check this spool's immediate neighbors because the /actual/ perfect match is still that same color but just a shade or two darker.

an exercise. if you live with or near someone who sews, you can maybe raid their stash for edification. gather three spools of the same color thread that are, relative to the fabric: 1) exactly identical in HSV, 2) one shade or two lighter in V, and 3) one shade or two darker in V.
>set fabric on table flat
>set spools on fabric
>pick a spool
>unreel few inches of thread from it
>lay this single strand across fabric
>repeat other two spools
>step few paces backwards
>observe
results? thread 1 will visibly stand out a little. thread 2 will stand out a lot more. thread 3 has effectively disappeared.

Colossal con just has to much notoriety. It's known as THEE party con so it's always going to attract those idiots who are just there to party and get fucked up. Lucky there is still enough actual nerds to keep them in check and not have it overrun with drunken fratters.
>>
Its only con that has an actually legit artist alley. And a adult artist alley. I mean that is just amazing.

I think the guest they get for how big they are is just a joke. Like you got the money to pull big names and you keep getting shit.
>>
>>10912835
I mean, you're right about Colossalcon not having many notable guests, but it's just not the type of convention people go to mainly to meet guests.
Honestly the convention as a whole is considered barely "mid" at best. Con management just cares about making the most profit as possible without adding anything of value to the convention.
Some people don't even buy a badge and just barrow one if they want to run through artist's alley or whatever. The real fun at Colossal is parties and the water park.
Buying a badge to their supbar con is kind of a waste.
