It is, wanting a "soft" lens for any subject is a meme for people high on fucking copium or deliberately wanting a visibly soft image not in focus. Usually for some meme artsy shit.
If you stop over baking images with post-process sharpening which literally highlights subtle textures and draws rings around it, "local contrast" which emphasizes any redness or gradients, and any other form of "slider" that retards who use Adobe software use all the time, you want a sharp lens.

Optical sharpness is the goal. Always has been, always will be.
Stop applying fake sharpness and you'll see how soft optics usually are, and then you'll be able to appreciate TRUE sharpness, from sharp glass, when you can simply not apply the fake shit.

There's literally no such thing as too sharp.
All instances of such a thing (and I mean ALL) where people even reference lenses being "too sharp" are always from retards looking at baked images. They're usually using Adobe software with sliders cranked up (defaults, btw) or they have sharpening enabled that they're not even aware of like with Adobe's "capture sharpening" bullshit that they might be oblivious to.
Everyone crying about stuff being too sharp is always busted for being an overbaked faggot if any research is done.
For example, anyone using dehaze/"local contrast"/curves/enhancements.

Bros, what's the best camera for normal people?

I just want the usualy normie stuff, landscapes, pics of family and friends or selfies with them and close objects. Perhaps there's also a video function.

Ideally a compact one that fits in bags or even my pocket.

for a normie, it will shit in lowlight without using the built in flash or tripod. the upside with the D80 is with an SB-600, off camera flash with the commander mode is where it shines, aside from having muh 'CCD' sensor.

I got a Lumix TZ110 and love it. Fixed screen so selfies the olde fashioned way, but not something I'd ever do. Oh, you can put it on something and control it from your phone, but that's not exactly spontaneous.
Good price, shoots RAW, really nice pics, fits in a pocket.
I use a Magfilter to attach a polarising filter.
Not sure what else to say, it's just a great wee camera.

Which lens should I pick up after the nifty fifty?

I have a Canon R8, not opposed to EF lenses though. I'm enjoying shooting with the 50mm but want to expand my horizons a bit. Been thinking about grabbing an 85mm...would you go with the RF 85 f2 or the EF 85 f1.8?

Is an 85mm forcing me into doing strictly portraiture?

There's also a Samyang 14mm f2.8 for a reasonable price near me. Is manual focus that much of a hassle to shoot with?

Idk, what are your thoughts /p/?

Pic is an image I took with my 50mm 1.8

Got a good bonus at work and decided to finally retire my Canon 6D. Will be going Sony after seeing what the mirrorless landscape looks like with CaNikon.

Canon, makes decent bodies and fantastic lenses, that R8 is probably the best entry level FF camera you can get. Still gatekeeping RF mount and will no doubt cripple R bodies to protect the cinema line. Lenses are probably the best but almost double the price of Snoys in my meme country.

Nikon, feels the best to me in hand and I really like the RAWs the most. Menus and AF settings make the most sense but no real Z mount 16-35 f2.8 equivalent and the pro-grade 50mm being the size of a 24-70 is a big loss since those are my two most lenses.

Sony, looks like the logical choice. Bodies have everything you could need crammed into them, native lenses are a good balance between perfect optical quality and being corrected by software means I don't carry around any too big or heavy. I like being able to buy an A7S/FX3 in the future if I wanted to get serious with vid. Colors/skin tones don't seem to be oversharpened/saturated like before. Ergonomics aren't the best and you do get the stigma of being another zoomer buying a Sony to shoot zoomer things but hey, it is what it is.

Pic related, hopefully me with my Snoy A7IV.

i actually prefer the look of images taken with a7iv sensor.

a good/bad lens makes or breaks the image quality but no matter which lens you put on a1, the images always look digital/robotic... idk how to explain it. they look like AI made them
>>
OP here, I got a better deal at the store on an open box A7RV so I went with it instead of the A7IV. So far I am pretty happy with my choice, I'm going camping this weekend so I'm taking it alongside the 16-35 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 GM to do some astro and landscapes.

The AF is what has impressed me the most, that AI chip really works even when my subject looks away. I have a black dog and it still manages to keep the AF on its eye surrounded by black fur. The files seem great, heard that the AI chip in this helps nailing white balance and desu I've not had to manually tweak it in Lightroom. I've also shot photos of people and the skin tones seem fine, no ugly shift to yellow or green or magenta. I'm using a few profiles in LR to see what works the best.

I'm also looking forward to picking up the smaller 1.4 primes down the line as well. I've got zero interest in carrying around that huge Nikkor or Cannot 1.2's so I think Snoy's approach of getting good enough optically and fixing the rest via software is good for most normies like me.

Nothing really retarded stands out to me yet- menus are fine, probably if you want to customise everything then you'll not like it but I find it alright.

Ansel Adams used to tilt the plate is his cameras in order to get his entire photo in focus at once, regardless of the depth of field. Now we all just go to the highest f stop value possible and shoot for the best. Alternatively some with set up with a tripod, and take 10 photos of the same exact scene with different focus points, and blend them all into one picture in photoshop. Others hate the concept and prefer a visual reference to the depth of field with an area clearly in focus and an area that is clearly not. This then begs the question, is focus better long range or up close?
I played around with the concept a bit. I took two pictures, one just as far back as possible, and then another on the close foreground. I did this trying to see which style I liked better. Personally I like the foreground in focus, but the other person I asked preferred the shot with the background in focus.

so what do you guys think? do you have a preference? Or do you like the Incel Adams "everything in focus" approach?

Yeah I know it’s bad. I’m just fucking around with foreground/background blur from extreme distance differences and its impact on the outcome of the photo.

Neither one of these are going to be printed or published. It’s just to start a discussion of what the role of a foreground should be. A frame for the background? What if it’s the subject instead? Or is anale Adams the best answer of “fuck it everything is in focus”
Which aesthetic choice do you like better? Which do you use? Can you provide examples with pictures you’ve taken?

I have an old jpeg thats corrupted that im trying to open. The last 6 apps i've tried display the pic, but either output it as a tiny thumbnail, or heavily watermark the image to the point of ruining it.

Does anyone know of an app that's free that is actually free to fix busted jpegs? Thanks, anons

You know nothing.
When a JPEG image is corrupt, no application will open it. You need special software to repair the file as it is a heavily compressed format reliant on decompression to deliver the pixels. If something in the chain breaks, the file is "bricked" from normal programs point of view, but recovery software can detect where errors rise and you can replace bad data to fix the problems.
A few bad bits can brick a JPEG. Fixing those bits will fix the file, you might lose some 8x8 blocks but the rest can be fine. GIMP won't help with this. GIMP is what you'd use after repair to then edit out the missing blocks to fill in the missing pixels.
>>
>>4310786
so far he knows more than you since he's actually recommended software that is free of charge and by your own admission is able to fix busted jpegs
>>
>>4304301
Try photorec. It might not be able to fix it but it will definitely be able to find a copy of the file within the disk that was temporarily created while moving or editing or viewing since all the software creates temp versions of files while accessing it. Chances are that at least one of the recovered copies might not be damaged
>>
>>4310787
I know English is not your first language, but consider using a translator.
GIMP does not fix busted JPEGs
GIMPO NO EL FIXO LA JPEGGOS PUTA MADRE

GIMP won't even open a busted JPEG. It just gives you an error.

I've been shooting on a Canon 5DIV for the past few years. My shutter has been sticking and instead of sending it back, figure it's time to upgrade. Before this I was a Nikon shooter with the D700/D750/D800 and really liked it but switched to Canon mainly due to the f1.2 lenses and much better customer service in my country.

I rented an R5 and R6II and they were nice enough with the pro zooms and the 50 1.2 but after trying the Z8 and the small 1.8 primes, I really was reminded of what I missed about Nikon. AF was better, the camera bodies felt better and more "rugged", DR was better but in fairness comparing to a previous gen Canon R5. One thing I hated though was how hyuge the Nikon 50 1.2 was- and that's my go-to lens in any system.

Is Nikon doing better now as a company in listening to their customers than they did during the DSLR days? I think I read they were overtaken by Snoy so it must be a kick to the nuts to be #3 now.

And here it is fellas! My first contact print of a wet plate colloidion negative I took on glass. Pretty little thing. The small shack is so crispy sharp in person. The fine detail really makes it stand out.

The nikkor T ED 720mm lens is really quite nice, but a major pain to work with. I had to use 2 tripods to support my camera in the wind for my 5 second exposure.

Because a camera on its own is not exciting, it’s all about what you can use it for. What did you want to photograph, what inspired you to buy the problem? If there’s no answer to that, found the problem.

That and I also doubt that he realises at all what is happening here. I am quite certain now that ol' zacherino is legally retarded. He just doesn't know better. It's not a choice that he ignores all and every single hint or justified critique, but he is simply unable to process it and to reflect it on himself just for a second.
A tragic figure, but also fascinating. Reminds me a bit of the Drachenlord.

The internet should never have opened up for normies.

Leicafags are an interesting species.
This is a thread to try and comprehend the minds of these consumerist retards.
Their subreddit, the premier place for Leica fans, has a rule explicitly stating that any photos need to "demonstrate a skill or technique that is incredibly difficult to execute correctly, has not been seen before, or both"
All the photos in the subreddit do not fit this idiotic criteria, yet are lauded.
99% of the posts there are about people buying gear instead of photos.
They care more about being seen with a Leica than actually using it.

I'm going to be purchasing a Leica M6 at some point this year.
Between the voigtlander 35mm f1.4 nokton and the 35mm f2 ultron which do you Anons recommend?
I wouldn't mind the extra light on the nokton, but pic related is shot wide open on it and honestly looks rather ugly. The lens coma is especially pushing me towards the ultron.

i have the nokton but i rarely shoot it wide open. pic related was around f2 i think. never tried the ultron, but that seems more your speed if you don't like messy images
>>
>>4311428
Shit that actually looks pretty nice. I guess the worst of the flaws in the design disappear when stopped down.
I like somewhat messy images, but the example I posted previously just feels bad, not even interesting.
I have seen quite a lot of nice images with the lens wide open as well however.
>>
>>4311584
perhaps, but having to stop down in the dark somewhat negates the advantage of the bigger max aperture. not to mention how hard it would be to hit focus at 1.4 in the dark.
here's another with the nokton >>4304154. don't remember what f stop but i think you just have to watch out for highlights in the corners on this lens. coma like in the street corner pic you posted doesn't bother me however. the nokton (single coated) is my only m lens rn and i chose it specifically because i wanted the flaws and flares.

ITT: previous work from more than 10 years ago that you shot

I'm doing a huge data migration and have had a second look at all of my early stuff when I had a Digital Rebel. I'll post stuff as I get through it and see it. This particular one is 2011.

You gave them a refund, right?
Or at least delivered the RAWs so they can not live in cringe forever?
It's fine to suck, but giving baked JPEGs only should be a crime.

The more i look at old pictures, the more i think muh image quality is fucking pointless shit in cameras and photography. At least the image quality of today is sufficient. It's just very sophisticated advertisement of the market.

lol no, everyone's gotta start somewhere, fine for what they needed at the time, no point in giving raws to a client

I have a handful of expired film. Do you have tips on how to best get results? e.g. wrong iso and do I need to let the developer know about it?
Can't remember the details but this is on expired film. I just stuck in in the camera. Kodak something
