looking for RTS recommendations with good single player campaigns or matches vs AI.
pic related is pretty much the first RTS I've fully dived into, beat the campaigns twice, spent some hours on skirmish mode but now I'm burned out on it. looking for something similar (other than the sequels), I liked how this game is more tactical and relies on you keeping your units alive rather than just have a massive army.

There was an obscure game called Ancient Conquest that had a bunch of unusual QoL features for its time like a zoomed-out strategic map or ability autocast. It also had some autonomous commands that you still hardly see anywhere, like automatic harvesting in a specified zone, attacking a zone, defending a zone, or a scout command (move to a point and return if attacked).
That said, UI is not a big deal in most singleplayer RTSes as long as they let you box-select and attack-move.

Seconding this. Blitzkrieg is a ton of fun, really love it and all of the clones and spin offs. Very much a dated game, but I feel like nothing else has that right mix of jank and simplicity. Stupid difficult at times, but also can be a cakewalk after you memorize all the arty locations and counterbattery. It's worth a play on its own merits and uniqueness.

But it doesn't have much of an AI, which is kind of a plus for a singleplayer, lets you pace yourself, but you can't really skirmish and don't expect complex maneuvers.

True. CS1 did have a lot of problems out of the gate but I dont think it launched in this bad of a state. I agree the under the hood is a lot better so hopefully it'll be better in the next 2~3 years which hopefully will give it enough time finally work out the polish its needed since announcement.

the engine is essentially the same as it was ten years ago, it lacks features that would be useful for large landscapes like doubld precision, which unreal and godot both have. unlike those engines unity doesn't have available source so it can't be retrofitted

Yeah, B&W1 is the god game. 2 is more of a city builder with some vestigial features like the creature or even miracles.
Just something like changing the way of winning over villages from converting them with your creature and miracles to just building a better town makes it feel much less divine.

I have no idea why they felt the need to change the polygons of all things. Even DoK used the same shapes for the same (land)ship classes. It's a HW3 thing I guess - taking something that worked fine and making it worse for no apparent reason.

In Mad Games Tycoon 1 and 2 you eventually reach a couple hundred employees, but not sure if that qualifies as a megacorporation. I saw that when I was making the Carolina decision and thought the name was weird and didn't fit. Reminded me of Fallout 3.

I just edited the localisation files, I have a feeling I may have missed something, but I didn't find anything else.
I ended up making the High King a guy called George Walker as a reference to George W. Bush (His middle name is Walker), Walker, Texas Ranger, and General George Hammond (of Texas) from Stargate SG-1.
In my original plan, I was going to add a KotH reference in there as well, I was thinking of naming him George Walker-Hill, but I wasn't too sure on that at the time.
Actually, now that I think about it, George Hillwalker could work. It would also reference Hank's half-brother in his initials (Good Hank/G.H.).

I've recently finished the orc campaign.
It was pretty good. Quite easy to cheese(at least on normal difficulty) but then again so was Warcraft 2. It still has its bugs like the game crashing every 2nd time you load but otherwise nothing too serious.
Looking forward to the human campaign and the others that will come.

Not really. I meant like how all the custom units and characters use share the limited base models. For example in the opening scene while their equipment are different, Orgrim, Rend, and Main are basically built on the same model (which is young Thrall I think).
